Together in body and soul

It's 7:01 pm and Muslims in Singapore break their fast during the Holy month of Ramadhan. At the Singapore Silat Centre Of Excellence it is no different with a large congregration of athletes, coaches, staff and members of the public dine together. After this meal, this dinner party then together proceed to do the special nightly prayers that is done only in the month of Ramadhan.

What a show of unity throughout all levels of hierarchy!

But what is more pleasing is the full participation from all levels to prepare for the breaking of fast. Athletes prepare the dining areas, coaches and parents prepare the food while staff buy the food itself. National Head Coach, Muhd Hidayat Hosni says, " Athletes will continue to train, even during the month of Ramadhan, though the training times will be changed to accomodate the religious obligations of our pre-dominantly Muslim athletes. After training, they will proceed to break fast together and thereafter do the special nightly Ramadhan prayers together." The prayers which are called terawih prayers are done only in the month of Ramadhan. During Ramadhan, there are no training sessions at nights as the training sessions are all done during the late afternoon.

Even National Head Coach Hidayat helps with the preparation of food.
Silat Athletes (such as Rifdi, in green) helping themselves to the food.

But why is the Singapore Silat Federation doing all this?

Added Coach Hidayat, " We are having this programme for several reasons. But 2 major reasons are; One, is to foster unity and togetherness amongst all levels in the hierarchy, not just the athletes. The other reason is to incalcate good values that the Holy Month of Ramadhan into our athletes. It is hoped that with these values, these athletes will become role models for our society."

Very well said, Coach Hidayat! And we certainly hope these silat stars to become role models in every aspect of life not just sports.
